Salt permanently changes the flavor of food, just as the influence of godly people can change a culture. We serve a godly purpose in the world simply by living out what we believe about Jesus. To “be salt” means to deliberately seek to influence the people in our lives by showing them the unconditional love of Christ.

“Are not two sparrows sold for a penny?
Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father's care.”
Matthew 10:29

In Israel at this time, you could buy two sparrows for a penny. They had very little value in the culture. Still, not a single sparrow dies without God knowing it. If God cares that much for a creation that men view as one of the most insignificant creatures, how much more does He care for His children? The children He created in His own image, that He breathed life into, that He sacrificed His Son to save.
